been set up better with more attention to detail, perhaps to make sure it fit while she was up on her little step stool.

He had to bend down to get the same distance from his mouth to the mic as was the case from her podium.

Not making an excuse, though. I think his lack of prep was by far the biggest problem... or else nervousness/inability to think on his feet as well as he should have.
