I've read and heard a number of similar stories, though

a good number of them had happier endings.
I remember reading or hearing on the radio an account of some doctor who related an experience he had.
He had two patients in the hospital and both were dying. One was Joseph Stalin and the other was some fairly well known Christian, if I recall.
He said that Stalin and his visitors were all depressed. From their standpoint there was nothing after this life and this was truly "the end" for him. Life had no real meaning and it was about to come to an end.
In the other room the patient and visitors were noticeably happier and more joyous. His coming death was not "the end" but a new beginning in eternity.
There was also a marked contrast when they came to that moment of death. Stalin suddenly pulled himself up off the bed a bit and shook his fist as if at God and had a look of horror on his face before he fell back onto his back in death.
The other gentleman had a look of joy and peace as he died and died with a big smile on his face with family and friends by his side praying for him.
