The upside is the production of players like Clarkson and Brown. You don't feel bad about using scholarships for them to sit out their transfer year. The downside is that players like that are more likely to bolt early for the NBA because they feel like they've spent so much time in college.
Bello is the worst kind of lose-lose situation. You use two years of a scholarship on him and get zero production. That scholarship could have gone to a high school kid with some potential that couldn't have given you less production than Bello but might have been developing into someone who could contribute as a junior.
And such an avoidable situation. Anybody who saw him play at Baylor was not surprised at how this turned out.
