they only started the day with about $5,000 in their vault + teller drawers.

People used to get ****ed if they wanted to do a big withdrawal early in the day, they'd tell them to come back later and hopefully they'd have some more cash deposits, or they'd have to order the cash in and have it on-hand for the customer the next day or whatever
