is that while his ERA is a "not horrendous" 4.35 or something like that, you might think "eh, that's not so bad, thats a quality start every time out on average"
When in actuality, he gives you 1 start where he throws a shutout for 7 innings, and then his next outing he gets rocked for 6 or 7 runs in 5 innings. You just have zero chance to even compete in a good 40-50% of the games he pitches. He's either elite, or he gets rocked. There's no "average" performance from him even though his ERA is "average"
I'd rather have a guy that gives me 6 innings and 3 runs given up every single time out, at least you know you are in those games.
