to be an effective smoke screen. She'd have to act like she's removing herself with "great reluctance" so as not to hurt the replacement nominee. And to FR's point below, by appearing to "hide" it, they make it all the more believable.

Still, all in all, I agree with you. She may be ill, but she'll stay in until she wins, loses or dies.
