lived there for awhile, someone in your proximity has taken up beekeeping. Every hive will 'swarm' once a year if it's healthy. Basically it creates a new queen and it and half the hive will take off to create a new hive. I lived in a house where the guy across the alley behind it had like a dozen hives, you never knew when you'd look out the back window and see a swarm. Even calmer varieties of bees are aggressive during the swarm, usually they'll eventually calm down and bunch up in a pile on a branch.
If you call a bee keeper it's likely he'll appreciate the chance to come and get the colony. Or if you're feeling salty wait until the evening after they're calm and you can take the lot out with very soapy water (dish soap)
