instead of reacting to awful reporting, I suggest you listen to the SEC coaches teleconference audio yourself:

Odom's turn starts at minute 59. The question about hand guns starts about 1:05 and is from Matthew Stevens from the Montgomery Advertiser. Stevens asks Odom a clumsy and mumbly question about his or Pinkel's policy on players legally carrying handguns beyond campus restrictions adding, editorially I guess, that he can also appreciate how hunting becomes a completely different issue.
Odom's answer follows: "Yeah we've got policies within our program and obviously within the University on a number of things and handguns would be one of those policies. Yes."
Stevens asks a follow-up question asking for clarity, i.e. "Just to clarify, is it specifically the policy that players are prevented from doing so, do I understand that correctly?"
Odom responds: "Yeah you've got to make sure with the rules and, ah, within, you mentioned hunting and somethings like that. But if there's a handgun issue then we deal with it and uh, not allowed in the program."
Stevens asks, "How do you communicate that to players when you're recruiting guys from all different kinds of backgrounds and personal experience?"
Odom responds, "Well you talk about the culture of living the right way and uh the culture on being a college student athlete and address it and I believe in being honest and upfront and making sure all the information is provided very, very clearly."
That concludes the full exchange.
