West Virginia was added when the league was about to fold. West Virginia has a vibrant football program. It was a desperation move.
Temple is 300 miles east and north of Morgantown. That adds even more travel costs for all sports teams.
Temple is in Philly, a city that doesn't care about college football. Temple averages only about 25,000 fans.
Most of the remaining candidates are much closer to (or in) primary Big 12 territory.
Schools like Cincy or Memphis have much more successful football programs, are much closer to the rest of the Big 12, and are more natural fits for a division that includes West Virginia. Thise two schools also open up good population states if a Big 12 Network happens and have fertile recruiting territories. In fact, the Big 12 should go into Florida before going into a rust belt state because of recruiting and population considerations.
