Free speech does NOT include the right for the speaker to be free of all consequences even if the speaker is 100% correct. Listeners have the right to listen, evaluate, criticize and within certain limitations to act on their conclusions even if those conclusions are wrong.
In other words, when some of the players engaged in the protest/boycott they should have known there would be consequences even if they were right. If they thought there would not be consequences, they were simplistic, naive and probably mislead by folks who knew better.
In adopting their protest/boycott position, the players jumped immediately to the nuclear option. They bypassed various intermediate steps that might have accomplished their goal without generating the consequences their choice of the nuclear option produced. Now, they, the program and the University have to live with those consequences.
