south America gets real cold in the extreme southen

end(Chile, Argentina, etc), and the ocean down there is pretty much too cold to swim in, even in Summer.

The thing about the southern hemisphere being temperate, it's almost all islands. Being on the coast tends to keep your temperatures more moderate in most areas. There aren't any huge, sprawling land masses like continential Asia or US/Canada where the temps get really cold in the middle of the continent.
