The Golden State Warriors is opening its doors to point guard Phil Pressey. It was recently reported that the Warriors invited Pressey to its training camp for this year.
According to Golden State of Mind, Pressey will sign to the Warriors as an unrestricted free agent, with the non-guaranteed deal having the potential to be a sure offer. The Warriors inviting Pressey to its training camp could mean as a test of sorts, ESPN reported. The team's management could be interested in acquiring Pressey but is not eager to sign him up just yet.
If the 25-year-old player indeed signs exclusively to the Warriors, he is joining a so-called super team made up of Stephen Curry, Draymond Green, Shaun Livingston, Klay Thompson, and the newly acquired Kevin Durant as one of the point guards. News about the Warriors' invitation to Pressey was tweeted by sports reporter David Pick.
NBA's current rules limit 15 players per team only. The Warriors already has 16 players in their lineup, and only 14 of those are certain to remain in the whole NBA season. With this ruling in place, Pressey has to showcase his skills and convince the Warriors to grant him a spot in its roster for the upcoming 2016-17 season.
Pressey, who's from the University of Missouri, wasn't drafted in 2013 and has since played for several teams such as the Phoenix Suns, Philadelphia 76ers, and Boston Celtics in the last three years, ESPN noted. The 5-foot-11 player averaged 3.4 points per game, 1.4 rebounds, and 3.3 assists in 12.3 minutes in his last games for the Sixers and Suns.
Pressey is not what you call a good shooter, given that he hasn't averaged more than 4 points per game in his career yet. Golden State of Mind wrote that Pressey is a "below-average defender," but is capable of distributing or facilitating the ball. His defense isn't impressive either, Warriors World noted.
On the other hand, the Warriors' last roster spot could go to JaVale McGee, who's good at blocking shots and can provide the team with added protection. Pressey's advantage over McGee, however, is his point guard skills.
Curry and Livingston are the only proven point guards in the Warriors' lineup, with Ian Clark and Patrick McCaw expected to be backup shooting guards behind Thompson. The Warriors could use Pressey as a spare point guard, though Elliot Williams could snag that position too.
