Other than the unrelated fact that previous coaches have sucked, I guess I'm not following your reasoning for why you doubt he can succeed.
You state: "I think Lovie the man is impressive. I'm sure he's good in the room with recruits. I'm sure he can handle the x's and o's."
If you're unsure if the university will value and prioritize FB (valid complaint at Illinois), Whitman was given significantly more money to hire Lovie and Lovie spent more on assistant coaches and staff hires than I ever remember.
