a whole lot of friends & acquaintances from Chicago & they'll be the first to tell you they do the same thing. I've witnessed it countless in Chicago & other cities with Chicagoans myself over the years, but why would you be expected to know anything about that, you don't have a clue about the actual City of Chicago, lol.

Both STL & CHI are very provencial! Hint: that is the core reason for the existence of the question. Just like it is in Boston, Philly & parts of NYC.

Must be neat to a be a fan of teams of a city you've only seen on TV.
