Jim Sterk was named a NACDA AD of the Year.
March 3, 2016
SAN DIEGO - San Diego State Director of Athletics Jim Sterk has been named a 2015-16 Under Armour AD of the Year honor by the National Association of Collegiate Director of Athletics (NACDA). The award will be presented on June 15 at the annual convention in Dallas.
"On behalf of the entire university, I want to express how extraordinarily proud we are of Jim Sterk's accomplishments,” San Diego State University President Elliot Hirshman said. “Jim's integrity and his focus on supporting our student-athletes represent the best of inter-collegiate athletics."
The ADOY Award highlights the efforts of athletics directors at all levels for their commitment and positive contributions to student-athletes, campuses and their surrounding communities.
Currently in his seventh season at SDSU, the national recognition for Sterk comes at a time when Aztec athletics continues to enjoy record-breaking successes. On the competition field and court, academic and community service or fundraising, San Diego State is enjoying unparalleled success in school history.
Since Sterk’s tenure at SDSU began in February of 2010, 52 San Diego State teams have advanced to NCAA postseason play, with 17 top-25 finishes and six teams finishing in the top 10. Since the beginning of the 2012-13 academic year, the Aztecs have claimed 30 team conference titles.
San Diego State remains one of the top football and men’s basketball programs nationally, posting the third-highest combined winning percentage this decade (trailing only Ohio State and Louisville).
The 2015-16 season is shaping up to be another great season for the Aztecs. Already, SDSU has won outright conference titles in football, women’s soccer and men’s basketball. In addition to winning the program’s 20th conference title, the football team won its final 10 games (second-longest active win streak to Alabama) on its way to a claiming the Hawaii Bowl championship.
Currently, a record 335 Aztec student-athletes are scholar-athletes (for a 3.2 semester grade-point average or a 3.0 cumulative GPA) and 13 of the 19 teams posting a fall semester GPA of 2.75 or higher. Of the 19 programs, 18 have posted their highest GPA during Sterk’s tenure.
The San Diego State athletic department is coming off of a record fundraising year in which the department raised $5.2 million toward the scholarship fund, more than 16 million for the Coryell Legacy, an initiative to endow scholarships and completed funding for the $15.8 million Jeff Jacobs JAM Center basketball facility.
Sterk is one of only four athletic directors at the FBS level to be honored. The others, which include two from the Big Ten Conference and one from the SEC, are Gary Barta (Iowa), Jim Phillips (Northwestern) and Scott Stricklin (Mississippi State).
Sterk earned his bachelor’s degree from Western Washington in 1980, where he was a four-year letterwinner in football and also earned a letter playing basketball. He received his master’s degree from Ohio in 1986. He has also served as the athletic director at Portland State and Washington State.
