My theory is Hillary is an afterthought, Trump is polarizing

Nobody is excited about Hillary.

But everybody is excited about Trump. Some are excited in favor. They excitedly attend rallies.

Others are excited against. They don't attend Hillary rallies (they aren't excited for her), but they will vote against Trump.

Hence why strong rallies won't translate into polls.
