First, we will probably not know the actual problem unless and until someone with actual knowledge of his situation discloses the facts.

Second, NCAA academic eligibility rules require a number of things, including making progress toward a degree. I.e. 20% of the necessary hours after one year in school, 40% after two, 60% after three, and 80% after four

I don't know how the rules are applied ot a situation where a player suffers serious injuries, such as Brantley did, but it may be that following his accident, he took a reduced load, etc.; got behind and never caught up.
