Think him taking the job as an interim role when the university really needs him would be something he would do.

I think he would be the best and most logical choice as as an interim AD and his name has never been even mentioned as an adviser/consultant. I have no knowledge of the situation but the fact his name has never came up tells me that the people in charge let him go and don't want him back.
