NCAA rules, meanwhile, are keeping Jordan Barnett off the court. Barnett transferred from Texas last winter and must sit out the first semester under NCAA transfer rules. Those same rules bar him from playing in exhibition games.
“There’s rules, and you’ve got to follow them,” Barnett said. “It’s going to be fun supporting my teammates as they play against some of the teams, and it’ll be fun just being there. I can’t wait. I can’t wait to experience it.”
Jabari Brown was in the same situation as Barnett, sitting out under NCAA transfer rules after joining the Missouri program the previous winter, when the Tigers went to the Netherlands, Belgium and France in 2012, but he played in those games.
“I actually think there was a mistake made, not on our part, but I think there was a mistake in the interpretation that allowed him to play,” Anderson said. “I think things were so far down the road the NCAA allowed him to play.”
Anderson suggested MU compliance staffers could offer a more complete explanation of what happened for Brown to play, but neither Mary Ann Austin, the executive associate athletic director in charge of compliance, or Mitzi Clayton, the associate athletic director for compliance, responded to an email seeking comment.
