particularly retail-type jobs (which is where the request generally comes from) this leads to part time workers getting less hours until they quit, and/or a combination of full time employees being knocked down to part time status.

Generally there isn't a huge firing spree, but they do give you far less hours and basically make you want to quit on your own.
