Why is economic growth so important

when the population isn't growing enough to require it?

Everyone always says countries (like Germany for example) need migrants and immigrants to maintain economic growth, why?

To support the bloated government through taxation? Why wouldn't you just create a more sustainable government that is supported by the population instead of requiring growth?
