State Parks to the National Park Service to serve as "anchor tenants" for Ozark National Scenic Riverways, all those parks needed major renovations and the MO DNR didn't have money to spend on them.
Fast forward 50 years and the state now sees ow tourism brings $$$ to the state and local economies and they are kicking themselves to not have a presence in the area.
They were able to acquire the Alton Club, which was a private in-holding of Alton Boxboard out of St. Louis and the old Camp Zoe property. Camp Zoe was THE place for Jewish kids out of St. Louis to experience the summer camps popular in the northeastern US.
