I think it was an accident. Melania read over previous first lady speeches and liked that part of Michelle's speech, so she used it. Probably thought she had changed it up enough. People around her let her down, though. I feel bad for the woman.
The whole thing should be a minor curiosity at most. But the way the Trump people have handled it has given the story more legs (so to speak) than it deserved.
