flawed... that implied premise being that our government is predominantly a good thing and that if the Republicans would go along with the Democratic program we would keep progressing.

By my reckoning the government in general, and most especially government as envisioned by the Democrats has been growing into an ever more deleterious influence upon society and has been pushing an ever bigger, more oppressive Big Brother government, and an ever more evil agenda.
For the record, I am not a Trump fan, but the Democrats bear much responsibility for the downward spiral of our society and for the challenges we face going forward.
Pretending that if the Republicans would just get out of their way everything would be so much better is a falsehood at best, a lie at worst.
