highways, rebels had taken control of the airport and the main media & Erdogan was relegated from trying to say he had things under control from his hotel room with the curtains drawn and from a cell phone app.
He was asking people to take to the streets. Commentators on Sky News were saying he looked very weak and grasping at straws. Some were saying his chances didn't look good.
The streets were fairly empty but a few people were coming out. I was surprised that the rebels did little or nothing to stop them.
Over time the Erdogan supporters saw that they weren't being shot, arrested or even stopped or harassed and became bolder and bolder and more people started coming out.
Later on I saw a rebel or two in full uniform shoot into the air a few times to get people's attention but he was obviously not going to hurt anyone.
A little later yet people started throwing some papers and trash at the tanks & the rebels just tried to ignore them, moving the tanks away some. Eventually people started climbing on the tanks and in one scene one of the rebels inside opened up the top cover and stuck his upper torso out and began trying to dialogue with the Erdogan supporters who apparently were giving him a bit of an earful.
It didn't look like the bloody type of coups that I would have expected to see if they were really serious about it & given that their own lives very well might be on the line if they weren't successful.
