is no access to the Android/Google Play app store by default. Only Amazon's app store, which doesn't have near as many apps.

Amazon locks you into their app ecosystem. So if you've purchased apps or content from google in the past, you won't have it on your Kindle tablet(without rooting and a bunch of other shenanigans to get the google play store on there)
