the paradox was real, especially for him at that time

You are a HC with a defensive pedigree and you know what works. However, you also want to bring in impact coordinators and let them do their jobs. Cross was seen by about everyone as a home run hire at that time and to get him on board he probably had to agree to let him run his 4-2-5 Patterson system that had so much success.

At the end of the day, he owns those ugly results and probably impacted his longevity at Mizzou.
