will be difficult to recover. MU was a perennial top 25 program every preseason without regard for the returning talent and incoming recruits.
When the roster had experience the program was often preseason top 10. This was a reputation earned from decades of results with one coach at the helm. When Norm retired, Quin inherited the program with that cache and for a few years the reputation was intact. The team when into a decline, in comes Mike Anderson and after a few years seemed to right the program that then flourished under Frank Haith, for a short time. After Haith left the AD took a different approach and hired a former program star and assistant that had some success as a lower level coach. Unfortunately, Kim Anderson was not up to the task, could not get any recruiting traction, assemble a competitive roster or develop players, and in game coaching was unacceptable. Although Cuonzo Martin did improve recruiting slightly, for a short time, he also did not develop any players, was too loyal to underperforming assistant coaches and was not able to assemble a roster that could compete in the SEC yet alone nationally
I understand where FIJI is coming from when he says the program can't recover. The reputation was not just tarnished, it was crushed and can not be restored by returning the team to the tournament a couple of times or by a hand full of tournament wins. The reputation has to be rebuilt from the ground up and will need a coach to win and keep wining for a long time.
Is Coach Gates the guy for that? Can he win, can he carry the team to an elite 8 or final four and if he does, will he stay? Nebraska football has average 4 wins the past 7 years. MU basketball is way behind Nebraska football. IF Gates can get us to an Elite Eight or Final Four a blue blood or richer team will try to poach him...would you stay if you were not a Mizzou fan/grad? That is why we may never get back to were the program was pre 2014. A young Norm Stewart is not around.
