There were major political motivations underlying Nebraska's expulsion, in addition to UNL not having a med school and associated research.
Also, Iowa State was always a "black eye" for the association. If you're a public university, you'd better be a state flagship, or elite in some other way.
IMO, Mizzou is safely "grandfathered in". We've been an AAU member for well over a century. We have a tradition of solid academics. And if they start kicking out schools like Missouri (as opposed to just UNL and ISU), it's gonna look like they're targeting the Midwest.
