I’m thinking there may be just 1 SEC team that gets out of the first weekend and makes it to the sweet 16, but some interesting match ups and opportunities for the 6 teams that qualified.

#7 Kentucky has a really tough road to get back to the Final 4 and defend their national championship. In the 2nd round they will play Illinois or West Virginia, with the Illini being the likely opponent, and they could give UK a tough match. Then in the sweet 16 they would run up against #10 seed Nebraska, B1G powerhouse. And if they survive that, they get #2 seed Texas in the quarters. That region, with Texas, Kentucky, Nebraska and Washington is just insane. I don’t think Kentucky gets past Nebraska, but that will be a great match if it happens.

#16 Florida was very fortunate to get the last national seed and home court for their regional, but they will need to get by a really good Miami Fla team (#11 RPI) in the 2nd round just to get to a match against #1 overall seed Louisville. I thought Florida would give Kentucky more of a struggle in the final weekend, but they lost both matches 3-0, 3-0. I like Miami Fla in the round 2 upset (that is not really an upset), and if Florida somehow gets past that, Louisville will end their season.

Miss St was the story of the SEC this year, finishing 2nd in the conference, and would have finished tied for first if Florida had managed to beat Kentucky just once. And, they are making their first NCAA appearance. Ever. Great storyline. They won’t make it past #2 Texas in the sweet 16, but they have a decent chance of getting there. They play Hawaii in the first round, and if they win that will get a shot at #15 seed Washington. Wouldn’t surprise me to see them give Washington a good match and maybe pull the upset. Regardless, they’ve had a great season.

Tennessee plays North Carolina in round one, winnable game for them. Then they would take on #9 seed Ohio St, and I can’t see them getting past them.

SC is in the same bracket as Tennessee, has a tough first round match against a good Western Kentucky team, and if they win that, they get a slightly over seeded #8 Georgia Tech. They won’t get out of that regional.

Finally, Ole Miss making the tourney was a surprise, as a number of teams with RPIs in the low and middle 40s didn’t get a bid, but the Rebels did with a 54 RPI. Not surprisingly, they are the 4th seed in the Creighton regional, have to play 14 national seed Creighton in the first round. They had a nice season but it ends there.
