The SEC ended up getting 6 teams in the NCAA tourney last night, although as usual there was considerable criticism of the selection committee.
Here are the final RPI ranks of the SEC contenders:
6 Kentucky
21 Florida
25 Miss St
29 Tennessee
42 SC
44 Arky
54 Ole Miss
60 TAMU
Kentucky got the 7 seed, and Florida got the 16 seed, which is not a popular decision. Mainly because they ended up with the #21 RPI, and Miami Fla had the #11 RPI, but is the 2 seed in Florida’s regional.
After those two, Miss St, Tennessee and SC got bids as expected, and in another surprise, Ole Miss got a bid but Arky didn’t. And TAMU flamed out the last few weeks (despite sweeping Missouri on the weekend 3-1 and 3-0), and didn’t come close. Certainly having to step on the same court Friday and Saturday with our historically awful team and our #200 RPI didn’t help their RPI at all.
Just goes to show it matters who you play, and who you beat, just like in softball and WBB. SC got a bid even though they were 6-12 in the SEC, and 14-14 overall. And Arky didn’t get in despite a record of 10-8, 19-10. Arkys 9-2 non con record against a bunch of easy teams didn’t help them at all, while SC beat 4 NCAA teams in their non con schedule (Wash St, Rice, and UCF twice) and also played and lost to #3 national seed Pitt.
