Five-star 2023 quarterback Malachi Nelson has decommitted from Oklahoma, he announced Sunday night, hours after news broke that Lincoln Riley was leaving OU for USC. He originally committed to the Sooners in July.
"One of the things that attracted me most to OU, other than the rich history and amazing fans, was the stability in the coaching staff and their ability to develop the QB position," Nelson wrote on Twitter. "In light of the recent events and changes, my family and I believe it's best if I de-commit from OU at this time. ... I'm not opening up my recruitment, I just want to see how everything transpires."
Nelson is the No. 5 overall recruit in the Class of 2023, according to 247Sports' Composite Rating, and the second quarterback behind Arch Manning. The Los Alamitos, Calif., native also considered USC, along with Alabama, Arizona and Arizona State.
Nelson was one of five players to decommit from Oklahoma in the aftermath of Riley's departure, including two other prominent 2023 commitments: Five-star receiver Brandon Inniss and four-star running back Treyaun Webb.
In the 2022 class, four-star linebacker Kobie McKinzie, four-star offensive lineman Demetrius Hunter and four-star defensive lineman Derrick Moore decommitted. Both McKinzie and Hunter are from Texas, while Moore is from Maryland.
Meanwhile, 2023 four-star wide receiver DeAndre Moore Jr., a teammate of Nelson's at Los Alamitos, reaffirmed his commitment to OU and running backs coach DeMarco Murray.
