Blackwell isn’t the best player on the team, or most valuable. Does she have the most raw talent? Yes. Is she literally the only player on the team who has the physicality to compete with the amazing athletes in the SEC? Of course. That doesn’t make her the best player though. She is a turnover waiting to happen. She had 5 turnovers today, the entire rest of the team had 9. She is one of the worst outside shooters on the team yet continues to launch 3s. She continues to bring the ball up court multiple times a game when we have tons of better ball handlers. There is clearly a role for her on the team that will benefit the team, yet she refuses to take it, and Pingeton refuses to make her play that role.
Maybe this team doesn’t have a clear cut best player, who really stands out over everyone else. But Blackwells flaws, which I believe will be there until she graduates, and which she doesn’t have the inclination, and Pingeton doesn’t have the will to correct, make it an open question who the best player is. I could make a decent case for it being Frank. Or even, gasp, Higginbottom.
