Former Auburn strength and conditioning coach Ryan Russell is expected to join Eliah Drinkwitz's staff at Missouri, according to a report from AL.com. It is not immediately clear, per the report, what role Russell will have with the program.
Russell had been with Auburn since the start of the Gus Malzahn era in 2013. The veteran Auburn assistant was not retained this offseason after the school fired Malzahn after eight seasons and hired Boise State's Bryan Harsin as the Tigers' new head coach. Malzahn was let go from the program despite garnering a 68-35 record during his stay as head coach on the Plains.
Russell had previously held a strength and conditioning role at Arkansas State in 2012 after a previous stint at Auburn as the assistant strength and conditioning coach from 2011-2012. He was also football's director of sports nutrition during that time. Russell has also worked with the Pitt, Louisville and Boise State programs during the course of his career.
Missouri is coming off its first season under Drinkwitz, who was hired after one season into his tenure as the head coach at Appalachian State. The Tigers went 5-5 during the 2020 season.
As a player, Russell played professional football in the Arena Football League for the Las Vegas Gladiators and the Louisville Fire in 2003. At the collegiate level, Russell played wide receiver for West Liberty State from 2000-02, receiving all-conference honors all three years. He earned his master's degree in adult education from Auburn in December 2006
