He said he had proud war veterans in his family, and therefore it was his personal view that the flag and anthem should be respected. It wasn't the least bit controversial to 99.9% of America.

Defending it wouldn't have been an act of bravery, but denouncing his patriotic beliefs was definitely an act of cowardice.
