targeting and other rules making players scared to hit receivers going over the middle, even with a great defense you still give up a heck of a lot of points. Look at Alabama this year. Look what Ole Miss, Florida, Georgia, etc. did to a very good defense.
If we aren't very good defensively, you simply cannot score enough points to overcome it. And until they allow defenses to play defense again, it is going to be pinball football.
