As to the 3's they are fine under certain conditions.

One issue is simply taking a "good" shot. Not under D pressure, balanced, not hurried and most important I guess, can the guy be expected to make 3's. If not, coaching is called for until the shot improves. As in, don't shot in games yet.
But the real point IMO is looking at pts/shot. You'll find that in many games the p/s for 3's are higher than for 2's. But naturally the shot % will undoubtedly be lower on 3's. (And I've seen games where that is not the case).
