Is that one of the biggest issues on conference only play during the pandemic (regardless of the sport), is that it guarantees you are playing only teams that adhere to your set of standards regarding testing, medical care, quarantining and isolation, return to play, crowd size, and other mitigating protocol.

When you play teams from other conferences you have no control over what you are getting in those respects.

And conference only play does cut down somewhat on travel and unnecessary exposure and increased risk. Not completely, but somewhat. You are right that conferences (particularly P5) are more spread out than ever from expansion, but if you don’t play everyone in your conference in a sport the schedule could be done more regionally, like SEC WVB did this fall.

Just speculating, but if the SEC goes conference only, with just 13 teams, they might be able to have every team play each other, for a 36 game season, which would solve the problem with unbalanced schedules based on the 4 teams you don’t play each year.
