Didn’t get to go or watch it live, had to follow online and saw the highlights.
1. What’s up with Dickson? Barely played in the first half, played only 9 minutes all game, had as many turnovers as points (4). Is she really that far down the depth chart? I had pretty much assumed with their prior success at the D1 level, Dickson and Dufficy would be pencilled in as starters and give us a steady 12-14 points a game each, sometimes 16-18.
2. If you told me before the game that Troup and Dembele would total 62 minutes playing time and the seasoned Dufficy, Hansen and Dickson total only 46 minutes playing time I’d say you were crazy. Dembele looked really good on the highlights (a biased sample of course). But is Troup really that far ahead of those three transfers who have had good success at the D1 level? Her minutes surprised me although she had a solid stat line.
3. 20 turnovers. Jeez. Was it really that bad watching the game? Is it going to be another season like that?
4. Blackwell filled up the stat line as usual. But is she playing any different this year? Is she more under control?
5. Does the offense flow any better with Dembele on the court? Were there still instances of players dribbling around near half court and then throwing up a wild shot or letting the shot clock expire? That was awful to watch last year. Does the offense actually look like it has a plan and purpose and flow?
Just a comment. Williams moves very well for a big. Maybe she is the real deal. Let’s see how she looks against bigger and better teams. UNA lost all 5 starters from a pretty decent mid major team last year, and we outsized them considerably. It’s going to be a different story against better teams like SLU, Texas Tech, TCU, and in particular Missouri St.
Good win to start the season. Shooting 73% (24-33) in the second half sure helped. Quick turnaround going to SLU tomorrow. Good news is road games are not as tough now without the usual crowd noise.
