better you score when you're playing the ball from the fairway or light rough, not swinging hard, and not trying to play like a pro.
Yes, close to the ball. A flat club arc has massively higher degree of difficulty for solid contact.
I read Hogan's (very small) book on the swing - think it's 5 elements - about 11 times.
