saying that the conviction rate on federal charges is something like 98%. He said that they have extremely deep pockets so that if they want to nail you they can about bankrupt anyone trying to defend themselves.
If I recall, he said that federal judges also cut federal prosecutors a lot of slack, so that they can push the limits... and apparently exceed them with little oversight & mostly impunity.
My wife worked with a controller who had worked for those real estate developers who were about to get nailed for fraud and took off for Chile with the cash awhile back, leaving a lot of victims holding the bag. I think it had been his first job and the feds were looking for someone to nail and they decided it was going to be him.
He hired attorneys, but his cash ran out & they threatened to totally destroy him & give him a long prison sentence. He finally agreed to their plea bargain pleading guilty to a felony, but no jail time. Afterwards they told him that they didn't really have much of a case against him, if any... but that didn't make him feel any better about the whole thing. He was railroaded and they got their conviction.
