several PAC 12 schools elect not to play football this season for what ever reason, going forward in the next inexorable round of conference expansion, it may be the Big XII poaching PAC 12 schools instead of the other way around. I have long considered the Big XII the conference that would be canabalized but the PAC 12 may instead be the conference that get axed.
It was always assumed it would be a minimum of three to four years before there was movement on conference realignment but the reaction to the Covid 19 pandemic from different states may prove to be the catalyst of change that occurs much sooner.
You can see the different schools of thought in conference discussions on when to open campuses back up and bring student athletes back.
But what if certain schools elect not to play at all or have orders from the governors or mayors of their cities not to? UCLA or USC of the PAC 12 for example. Rutgers of the B1G? Vanderbilt or Missouri from the SEC?
The SEC is planning on playing a 12 game schedule. Already there is preliminary discussion of TCU replacing USC on Alabama’s schedule.
Football is the major revenue generator of college athletics and there are all sorts of scenarios being discussed with various conference commissioners to find a way to play the games.
Buckle up..this might get interesting in ways many did not contemplate. —-oz
