And I'll admit he's gotten a LOT better, and let off his Big 10 bias BS.
To end the 1997 and 1998 seasons, no conference had more ranked teams than the Big 12. In the 199 preseason poll, the Big 12 had 1 less team ranked than the SEC of Big 10 (and interestingly enough, had the same number after week 1).
On the 1999 CFB preseason show, their wrapup consisted of the analysts going around the table and stating which conference they thought was best. One guy says SEC. Another says Big 10. Then one of them says Big 12....and Herbie just looses it. Hysterical laughing like it was the craziest thing he'd ever heard. He was the new guy at that point and the others just looked at him like wtf...
In a debate where "Big 12" was very possibly, if not probably, the best answer, Herbie couldn't be brought to even consider that anybody other than the Big 10 was the best conference in the country in that era where perception had not caught up to reality about the Big 10.
