College basketball has strict rules about how much time they can spend with coaches, and they also have school obligations.
As professionals, NBA or otherwise, they can dedicate themselves fully to the sport and can spend as much time with coaches as they want.
They could, in theory, make more on their first contract if they stay longer in school and get better before going pro. Or they can go pro, get paid to get better, and still make more money. As long as they don't lock themselves into a bad contract right after leaving school, they're not going to come out behind by going early in most cases.
