After Sunday’s win over Minnesota, Malone sought out Michael Porter Jr. and asked him how healthy he was. When Porter said he was OK, Malone chided the rookie for not playing hard enough.
Perhaps it was his fluctuating role off the bench, or possibly he was still easing his way back after returning from his ankle injury. But according to Malone, Porter owned his poor effort.
“I thought we got what we’re used to getting from Michael prior to that ankle injury,” Malone said, of Porter’s 13-point, eight-rebound night. “Productivity, efficiency and just his length on that glass is so impactful.”
Porter said he had a different mindset entering Tuesday night and “let it loose, especially on my ankle.”
His smooth shooting returned, as did his aggressive cutting. When he plays with that attitude, given his physical gifts, Malone will have no choice but to find the 20-plus minutes Porter was getting in January.
