In the softball polls this week, despite a pretty mediocre 3-3 record with 1 good loss, 2 bad losses, and no really significant wins. There are just so many upsets happening, and the teams in the 15-25 range aren’t impressing much.

Taking the ESPN rankings from last week, which had Mizzou at #19:

3 teams above us really struggled too and will fall, perhaps significantly, but maybe not below us. #12 Tennessee is in a free fall now without their ace pitcher, lost 4 straight games to UCF twice (both run rules) and USF twice. Both teams were receiving votes last week. #15 Minnesota is now just 8-6, lost 2 more games, to Texas St and Baylor. And #16 Arizona St lost 3 straight, to Florida, Notre Dame, and Cal St Fullerton. Nevertheless I don’t see us ranked ahead of any of them, although we have very similar bodies of work, maybe better.

The team right behind us, #20 Texas Tech, beat no one and lost to Houston and Syracuse, neither of whom was receiving a single vote in either poll. We should stay ahead of them.

#21 James Madison was run ruled twice by Georgia. We should stay ahead of them but it may be close due to their head to head win over us.

#22 SC will pass us, and should, they earned it by beating a top 10 (for now) Michigan team, along with 4 mediocre teams.

#23 Arkansas beat 4 cupcakes and took an awful 5-0 loss to Montana. In a just work we stay ahead of them easily.

#24 Miss St lost to #17 Oregon and unranked BYU. Their SOS and body of work is nothing compared to ours. We don’t drop below them.

#25 VT beat 5 cupcakes. We have a head to head win. In a just world they don’t pass us.

Of the teams that were receiving the most votes last week but were not ranked, will any of them pass us? #26 Northwestern lost 4 more games and is now 5-9. Nope. #27 Notre Dame lost 3 more games. Nope. #28 Baylor went 5-0 beating Minnesota and several other teams with pulses (Texas St, Illinois). They are now 13-2. They will definitely crash the top 25 again, but not ahead of us, not if anyone remembers we run ruled them. Won’t even talk about anyone lower than 28 last week jumping us.

So as disappointing as the weekend was, I see only 1 team sure to jump us, SC. So we will be no higher than 20, unless Tennessee or ASU drops significantly. I’ll say there will be a few injustices but we will still be in the 20-22 range.

Of course they want to do the best they can but being ranked - alstl MU - 2/25 12:23:23
I strongly suspect that it is not irrelevant to them - *M* KC - 2/25 13:58:47
