I hope I’m wrong, but I don’t think Rollin is going to become a substantially better fielder. Ever. I’ve seen mediocre hitters improve substantially as they get older and get good coaching. Same with pitchers. I just don’t think it happens as much, at least to that degree, with fielding. Some players are just instinctually great fielders. And some aren’t. Yes, there are fundamentals you can learn that can make you a better fielder. But instinct plays a big part. Particularly at SS.
I love Rollins competitive spirit. She has a chance to be a monster on offense here, one of our best ever, with her combination of hitting for average, power and speed. I just don’t think she is ever going to be a really good defensive player. Right now it’s clear that Coach LA sees the overall benefits outweighing the deficits.
