You can be principled and stand up to the media. Hell, if you're really principled, the media will fall in line.
He's lucky (and I stress luck, because I don't think any President controls it) that economic fortunes are favorable. If the wealthy were getting hit in their pocketbooks, he'd be gone in a heartbeat. Instead, they'll tolerate him because $$$ comes first.
