Free speech is a constitutional concept that limits the government from impeding the free expression of ideas. Wholly private actors using their own right to assembly and speech is not covered by the first amendment. It is the part fo the democratic process of the free exchange of ideas. In short, if you say stupid chit, and get called out for it, it really isn't your free speech that is being infringed.
On the other hand, the head of the federal government calling the press the enemy of the people and calling out the media as liars, is a real threat to democracy.
