defensive coaches usually don't see the big picture as well and are too conservative.
I use Tony Dungy as a prime example. Dungy had a great team in Tampa. The defense was among the best ever and the offense had enough talent to play be good enough to win. BUT, Dungy absolutely wrecked that offense. He hamstrung those guys so much that they couldn't do anything.
In 2001 they were 9-7, lost the wildcard, and had the fullback, Mike Alstott, as the leading rusher...on purpose.
In 2002, Gruden took the same team, sans 1 key guy, and went 12-4 and won the Superbowl.
Dungy, then went to Indianapolis where he fixed the defense and culture, but stayed the hell out of the way of the offense and they had their best era ever.
Not a Dungy fan as a head coach, but I will say that he either learned a very good lesson or he had certain control stripped away from him.
